⚽ shiny balls

and shinier odds + predictions

Good Morning ☀️,

It’s Lucas here, your Chief Predictions Officer at What Are the Odds?

This week’s latest Premier League drama — goalkeepers don’t like the new Puma Orbita Ultimate PL ball. Apparently, it’s too “smooth and shiny”.

Seems like some of them are longing for their childhood all over again.

Anyway, whining goalies aside, here’s what’s ahead in this week’s edition of What Are the Odds?

  • This weekend’s top Premier League score predictions and odds roundup. 🦵

  • A little trivia quiz based on the latest tactic to take the Premier League by storm. 🏟️

  • A little Luis Enrique quote to teach us all about testing the limits to discover something new. 🔥

SCORE PREDICTIONS [FIRST HALF]

This week’s top tips and score predictions, brought to you by CXSports — the leader in odds and score predictions.

Chelsea vs Fulham
🏟️ English Premier League
Saturday 30 August; 13:30 (Europe/Paris)

  • Why we’re watching: Chelsea’s huge edge in this game makes this a must-watch game this weekend.

  • CXSports says: Chelsea’s attack has been looking dialed in under Maresca — 5 goals and 59% possession in their first couple of games hints at them not just finding some random early success, but creating repeatable chances. And that’s been backed by a solid defense, with just one goal conceded. Fulham’s been much more muted — 2 scored, 2 conceded — and will find themselves on the road in this game, which will only hurt their chances. In short, huge edge for Chelsea.

  • Score prediction: 2-1 for Chelsea

Option #1

  • Bet: Chelsea Victory

  • Odds Range: 1.37-1.51

Option #2

  • Bet: Both Teams to Score (Yes)

  • Odds Range: 1.57-1.77

Manchester United vs Burnley
🏟️ English Premier League
Saturday 30 August; 16:00 (Europe/Paris)

  • Why we’re watching: While this is far from the surest thing we’ve got for you this week, this is by far one of the better “value” shots we’ve got for you players who don’t mind a bit of a long shot.

  • CXSports says: Manchester United are under huge pressure right now as they find themselves facing a similar fate to last season. About their only hope is to rediscover their attack, which is showing some serious red flags right now. Meanwhile, Burnley are coming into this game with great defensive form and appear to be creating chances well (their 2-0 over Sunderland certainly looked good). That could create a very interesting dynamic that sees this game play on a much more even footing than the odds are suggesting.

  • Score prediction: 1-1 Draw

Option #1

  • Bet: Draw

  • Odds Range: 4.50-5.25

Option #2

  • Bet: Draw No Bet (Burnley)

  • Odds Range: 4.70-7.17

Sunderland vs Brentford
🏟️ English Premier League
Saturday 30 August; 16:00 (Europe/Paris)

  • Why we’re watching: This one’s all up in the air, and could easily go both ways. Fortunately, the double-chance play still looks decent.

  • CXSports says: Sunderland have certainly made a statement as a freshly-promoted team. And, even if their match last week didn’t end favorably, they’re still carrying momentum from their big opening weekend performance (and will certainly benefit here from a strong home atmosphere). Brentford, for its part, has been looking shaky in defensively (they’ve conceded three already and haven’t fully integrated their new high-cost signings). This is setting the stage for Sunderland to edge it at home, albeit with a huge caveat — with their promotion being such a recent event, we still don’t have enough of a feel for how they’re going to hold up in the top flight. So let’s call this one too-close-to-call.

  • Score prediction: 2-1 or 1-2 for either side.

Option #1

  • Bet: Double Chance (Sunderland / Brentford)

  • Odds Range: 1.18-1.35

Option #2

  • Bet: Sunderland Victory

  • Odds Range: 2.33-2.63

Tottenham vs Bournemouth
🏟️ English Premier League
Saturday 30 August; 16:00 (Europe/Paris)

  • Why we’re watching: Some solid odds here once you consider Tottenham’s solid edge in this game.

  • CXSports says: Tottenham are coming in hot after a huge 3-0 over Burnley. And let’s not forget that history is firmly on their side — in their last 16 H2H meetings, Spurs have claimed 10 to Bournemouth’s 3 (and are usually scoring first, then dictating play). Of course, Bournemouth has been known to frustrate Tottenham — last year they managed to take four points across the two fixtures — and they’ve already proven this season that they can find goals when needed. With that said, Tottenham’s sharper attack and home advantage suggest they’ll edge this one.

  • Score prediction: 2-1 for Tottenham

Option #1

  • Bet: Tottenham Victory

  • Odds Range: 1.57-1.73

Option #2

  • Bet: Both Teams to Score (Yes)

  • Odds Range: 1.43-1.61

HALF TIME ENTERTAINMENT

Whinging goalies aren’t the only thing taking the Premier League by storm this week.

Apparently, just about every club’s been spotted deploying “rugby-stye tactics” on the field — booting the ball right after kickoff forward to the corner flag. The idea — gain as much ground as quickly as possible.

Apparently, it was PSG who started the whole trend. So, to honor the side that (apparently) re-made soccer tactics, here’s a quick (and very easy) quiz from our friends at Masters of Trivia.

Question: What is PSG's mascot?

  • A: Parcy the Parisian

  • B: Germain the Lynx

  • C: Leo the Lion

  • D: Pierre the Panther

SCORE PREDICTIONS [SECOND HALF]

Wolves vs Everton
🏟️ English Premier League
Saturday 30 August; 16:00 (Europe/Paris)

  • Why we’re watching: Another super tight fixture with some solid odds on a semi-long shot that’s not really that much of a long shot.

  • CXSports says: Wolves are utterly desperate for a win to get out of the relegation zone, so they’ll be looking to make the most of their home advantage here — most of their previous matches here have been tight and competitive, so there is some hope. With that said, in terms of recent form, Everton have an edge here and have held Wolves to a draw before, so they’ll be hard to beat, even on the road. That sets this up as a game that’s very likely to end with both teams conceding and scoring a single goal each. In other words, a draw.

  • Score prediction: 1-1 Draw

Option #1

  • Bet: Draw

  • Odds Range: 2.82-3.09

Option #2

  • Bet: Both Teams to Score (Yes)

  • Odds Range: 1.65-1.91

Leeds vs Newcastle
🏟️ English Premier League
Saturday 30 August; 16:00 (Europe/Paris)

  • Why we’re watching: Big odds here on a high-probability draw.

  • CXSports says: Leeds are back in the top flight with an early taste of confidence after their 1-0 against Everton. Of course, that was short-lived, and their sobering (to put it mildly) 0-5 loss to Arsenal certainly put a damper on things. Newcastle, for its part, has been riding its own wave built out of last season’s success, and still seems to know how to grind out results — their recent form certainly sets them up as a tough opponent, even on the road. Of course, Leeds, at home and keen to prove themselves, could be dangerous. That could set this up to be tight. Real tight. If we really had to pick, we’d give a slight edge to Newcastle… but only slight, and we’re ultimately leaning towards a draw.

  • Score prediction: 1-1 Draw

Option #1

  • Bet: Draw

  • Odds Range: 3.10-3.85

Option #2

  • Bet: Both Teams to Score (Yes)

  • Odds Range: 1.51-1.71

Brighton vs Manchester City
🏟️ English Premier League
Saturday 30 August; 16:00 (Europe/Paris)

  • Why we’re watching: Some more big odds on a high-probability “outside shot”. Take the both-teams-to-score play if you prefer a little more safety.

  • CXSports says: Man City have dominated this matchup in the past — they’ve taken 13 of the last 18 meetings, with Brighton taking a handful of the scraps at just 2 victories. That makes City favourites on paper, however, their weakened midfield setup and lack of depth could blunt their usual control. Given this, Brighton will be keen to (and just might) exploit these weaknesses, especially on the counter or from set-pieces. And with their home advantage, that could be dangerous. Dangerous enough to take the victory? Maybe not. But dangerous enough to draw? Absolutely.

  • Score prediction: 1-1 Draw

Option #1

  • Bet: Draw

  • Odds Range: 3.55-4.00

Option #2

  • Bet: Both Teams to Score (Yes)

  • Odds Range: 1.41-1.59

Nottingham vs West Ham
🏟️ English Premier League
Saturday 30 August; 16:00 (Europe/Paris)

  • Why we’re watching: Nice solid odds on a near certain West Ham victory.

  • CXSports says: Nottingham Forest are coming into this game full of confidence after their solid home victory to open the season. They’ve even shown some solid, even if not perfect, and their opportunistic finishing makes them dangerous at the pointy end. West Ham, on the other hand, are under big pressure — they’re leaking goals left, right, and center, and, making matters worse, are missing key attackers. The fact that they’re playing on the road here puts them at a huge disadvantage — so much so that we expect Nottingham to run away with an easy victory here.

  • Score prediction: 2-1 for West Ham

Option #1

  • Bet: West Ham Victory

  • Odds Range: 1.53-1.75

Option #2

  • Bet: Both Teams to Score (Yes)

  • Odds Range: 1.65-1.96

THE FINAL SCORE

Your weekly dose of inspiration, brought to you by Masters of Trivia.

This week, we’ve got a timely quote by PSG’s head coach, Luis Enrique.

Moral of the story?

Well, taken alone, there’s not much. (Unless stating the obvious — that there are always limits — can be counted as inspiration.)

But, here’s the thing. If PSG’s pioneering “rugby” tactics are anything to go by, Enrique acknowledges where the limits are… and that’s what allows him to test them.

Long story short: Find the limits, and then test them.

Who knows what you’ll discover.
