  • Torino has nine wins, six draws, and a single loss (back in 1990) across 16 previous head-to-heads against Monza.

  • Torino and Monza have each taken 0 points from their opening two Serie A matches this season.

  • Monza’s head coach (Ivan Juric) managed Torino for three full seasons (2021-2024), while his counterpart (Ignazio Abate) is taking his first major senior job at the club.

• CXSports says: While the season’s still young, if there’s one thing we can take away from it, it’s the fact that neither of these teams seems to be able to defend right now. Monza appears to be the worst — they’ve shipped seven goals in two Serie A matches. However, Torino’s own record isn’t exactly pristine, either with four conceded across two defeats to Milan and Sassuolo. With that said, it’s nearly half of what Monza has leaked, so there’s a case to be made that, while they’re not defending well, Torino’s at least defending better than Monza.
  
  With that said, Torino hasn’t exactly been banging out goals to make up for their defensive frailties. In fact, they’ve only managed to score a single goal in each of two consecutive league defeats (a rate of 1.0 a game). Meanwhile, Monza’s at least managed 1.5 (which is still worse if we read it in context with their defensive numbers).
  
  Of course, Coppa Italia openers have been known to loosen up front lines that looked stuck in league games. So we may well see Torino’s offense really open up here. After all, Giovanni Simeone needed only nine minutes to find the net against Carrarese in the previous round, and he’s the kind of player who can exploit the exact sort of sloppy central defending Monza has been serving up.
  
  We also can’t ignore the head-to-head history here, which also favors Monza, and not by a small margin. In fact, across 16 previous head-to-heads, Monza’s only been defeated by Torino once, and that was all the way back in 1990. And the last time these two met (last year), that game ended Monza 2-0 Torino.
  
  So here’s where we see this one heading. Monza’s defense as it stands right now looks like it’s going to leak, so we expect to see Torino manage to at least get something on the scoreboard. And if they can open up in offense, expect that to be multiple somethings. As for Monza, we have slightly lower hopes for them. Between the head-to-head history, the goal-difference gap, and home advantage at the Grande Torino, it looks like the best Monza might be able to hope for here is to take advantage of early season cobwebs and a potentially lackluster Torino offense to hold out for a draw.

  • Dortmund’s defense conceded a goal a game against Bundesliga opposition last season. That’s the same rate HEBC’s fifth-tier defense is conceding right now against much, much weaker opposition.

  • Dortmund will have at least five first-team players unavailable making this a rather thinned-out squad for a club of Dortmund’s size.

  • HEBC’s biggest previous crowd was 4,650. They’re about to play in front of a stadium that holds up to 57,000. That twelve-fold increase in the scale will likely have an impact.

• CXSports says: Borussia Dortmund finished last season as Bundesliga runners-up with 73 points from 34 games. And in those games, they scored 70 goals all while running one of the stingiest defense in the entire league with barely over a goal a game conceded. Meanwhile, HEBC Hamburg play in the Oberliga Hamburg, Germany’s fifth tier. And if that wasn’t enough of a gap, HEBC are currently mid-table-and-sinking there (13th of 18) while only scoring one goal a game while shipping 1.4.
  
  However, there is a twist here (not that it changes the outcome…). While Dortmund is obviously the vastly superior side here, they’re currently a little beaten down. Just three days before this game, they lost the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup 1-2 to Bayern Munich. And five days before that, while playing their opening Bundesliga game against newly-promoted Hamburger SV (which they won 2-0), new signing Giannis Konstantelias tore his ACL, while Samuele Inacio picked up a red card and is now suspended. Now add to that long-term absentees Nico Schlotterbeck and Emre Can, plus a questionable Ramy Bensebaini. In other words, the squad hitting the field in this one won’t be anything close to the first-choice XI. So we probably shouldn’t lean too hard on historical stats here.
  
  Of course, none of that’s to say HEBC has much of a chance here — they’re a full 4 (and a half if we count able standings) divisions down from Dortmund. And it’s not just league standings, either. There’s a huge experience gap. HEBC had never won a trophy in its 115-year history until three months ago, when it beat SC Vorwarts-Wacker 04 5-1 in the Hamburg regional cup final, which was their biggest game ever — played in front of 4,650 people. And now they’re walking into a stadium that seats up to 57,000 which could simply be overwhelming for HEBC while being business as usual for Dortmund.
  
  As such, expect Dortmund’s remaining attacking talent to still find enough to pull well clear of HEBC with the gap in quality being what it is.

• Top 3 Stats:

  • Bayern’s record in last season’s Bundesliga was 122 goals (3.6 per game) has continued in this campaign with 7 goals scored in their first 2 2026-27 matches.

  • While Osnabruck’s 3. Liga title run ended with them conceding just 0.4 goals per game across their last 5, their transition into 2. Bundesliga has seen their defense fall apart with 2.33 goals conceded per game.

  • While these two have only met 3 times in 48 years (so don’t put too much weight into this), Bayern won both times they played Osnabruck on the road (2001, 2004). Osnabruck won the other game at Bayern, however it was back in 1978.

• CXSports says: For even the most casual follower of German football, the better team here is probably already obvious — it’s the club that recently broke a 55-year-old scoring record and which hasn’t lost a competitive match since May. (And yes, that club is Bayern). Meanwhile, the other club (Osnabruck) is three games into life one division higher than it’s used to. And already, it’s found itself struggling with the pace of that division after shipping nearly two and a half goals a game. And that’s while playing against opposition considerably less accomplished than what Bayern’s capable of offering up this Wednesday night.
  
  Of course, none of that means Osnabruck will just lie down and accept defeat from the outset. Although, if they do hold out for a while against Bayern, it probably won’t be based on the quality of their football alone (doubtful, but who knows). What might temporarily keep Osnabruck in this one could be the sold-out 15,741-capacity stadium that hasn’t hosted Bayern since 2004. And that atmosphere — tigh, loud, and hostile for the first twenty minutes — is the kind of atmosphere that can rattle bigger teams. And if the crowd does ge to Bayern, Osnabruck won’t be going entirely without teeth. After all, they did managed to score three at Heidenheim in their season opener, and they’ve found the net at least once in every 2. Bundesliga match so far (too bad about how much they’re conceding…).
  
  With that said, that entire scenario — the crowd rattling Bayern and Osnabruck bringing its teeth — if it even happens, will likely be a temporary speed bump. Ultimately, there’s no real way a 2. Bundesliga side with a leaky defense and an okay offensive record can hold off one of the finest teams the Bundesliga-proper has to offer. Particularly when that team scored 122 league goals in a single season and seems to be carrying that performance forward.
  
  As such, expect to see his one end heavily in Bayern’s favor, even if Osnabruck somehow manages to get something on the board.
